What are the different types of cranes?

Hoist is a type of mechanical equipment that is very important in various modern projects. It is a mechanical equipment to lift, decline and move the heavy pallets through the hooks. Different projects have different demands for weight of load, operation environment and operation mode of lift.Hoist is divided into the following types according to moving mode:

Mobile Cranes

  • Truck Crane

Truck cranes feature excellent mobility and high relocation efficiency. They can be drived at high speed directly on highway and reach job sites fast. They are particularly suitable for short-term, decentralized lifting tasks, such as cross-regional operations across multiple construction sites, road emergency repairs, emergency rescue, and other scenarios, which can significantly save relocation time and transportation costs.

Truck cranes offer good operational flexibility and are adaptable to lifting operations in diverse scenarios. Their boom length and working radius can be flexibly adjusted according to lifting requirements. Some models are also equipped with a jib to further expand the working height and range. With a slewing mechanism, the lifting arm can rotate 360 degrees, covering a wide working area.

Truck cranes have a compact structure and are easy to operate. They can be flexibly parked and operated even in space-constrained environments such as narrow urban sites and factory premises.

Truck cranes cover a wide range of load capacities to meet different needs. Ranging from 5 to 130 tons, they can satisfy the operational requirements of different industries and scales, including daily small-scale lifting, lifting of small bridge components, and transfer of large-scale equipment.

  • Truck-mounted Crane

A truck-mounted crane is a special-purpose device that integrates a lifting mechanism at the rear of a truck. It is flexible and easy to operate, and can freely access space-restricted areas such as urban blocks and factory compounds, boasting stronger traffic adaptability.

With a rated lifting capacity ranging from 2 to 25 tons, it can hoist small construction machinery, building pipes, power equipment, agricultural machinery and other items.

  • All-terrain Crane

The all-terrain crane is a high-end mobile crane that combines the high mobility of truck cranes with the strong site adaptability of crawler cranes. It can switch freely between high-speed driving on highways and operating on complex off-road terrain, featuring high relocation efficiency and stable operation. It serves as a core piece of equipment for large-scale engineering projects and high-difficulty lifting tasks.

All-terrain cranes are heavy-tonnage models, with a rated lifting capacity mainly ranging from 100 to 1,600 tons. They are equipped with multi-section telescopic main booms; some models can be fitted with additional attachments such as extra-long jibs and tower jibs, enabling a lifting height of over 100 meters and a wide working radius coverage. These cranes are capable of meeting high-end requirements including the lifting of large components and the installation of high-altitude equipment, such as the hoisting of wind turbine mainframes and blades.

All-terrain cranes are furnished with an independently adjustable multi-outrigger system (usually H-type, X-type, or a combined type). The outriggers feature a large span and strong load-bearing capacity, and their height can be flexibly adjusted according to ground flatness to ensure the horizontal stability of the crane body. Some high-end models are also equipped with automatic leveling and load distribution optimization systems to further enhance operational stability. Meanwhile, the equipment integrates multiple safety devices such as load moment limiters, wind speed sensors, tilt sensors, over-hoisting protection, and anti-rollover early warning systems. Combined with an intelligent control system, it can monitor operating parameters in real time, timely avoid dangerous working conditions such as overloading, over-slewing, and excessive wind speed, and thus guarantee the safety of high-difficulty operations.

  • Rough-terrain Crane

The rough-terrain crane is a type of mobile crane specially designed for operation on complex off-road terrain. It can move flexibly and perform stably in harsh environments such as unpaved roads, rugged mountains, and muddy swamps, and is widely used in special scenarios including mining, field infrastructure construction, forestry operations, and emergency rescue.

With a rated lifting capacity mainly ranging from 20 to 100 tons, rough-terrain cranes are primarily used for medium and heavy lifting tasks. Their booms mostly adopt a telescopic structure, allowing flexible adjustment of boom length and working radius; some models can be equipped with jibs to extend the lifting height. The lifting system is hydraulically driven, featuring stable operation and sensitive response, which enables the precise lifting of heavy objects.

The body structure of the rough-terrain crane is of reinforced design. Key components such as the frame and boom are made of high-strength steel, providing excellent impact and fatigue resistance. The electrical and hydraulic systems of the equipment are equipped with dustproof, waterproof and anti-corrosion protection devices, which can effectively resist erosion from field dust, rainwater and humid environments. Some models also have a low-temperature starting function, enabling normal operation in alpine regions. Overall, their reliability and durability are far superior to those of ordinary truck cranes.

  • Crawler Crane

The crawler crane is a heavy-duty mobile crane equipped with a crawler-type traveling mechanism. It features a low ground contact pressure (usually only 0.08–0.15 MPa) and extremely high operational stability, enabling it to lift ultra-heavy loads in harsh terrain and complex job sites.

Crawler cranes are mainly heavy-tonnage models with a rated lifting capacity ranging from 50 to 2,000 tons, which can meet the demands of extreme heavy lifting tasks. They are fitted with multi-section telescopic main booms and can be equipped with additional attachments such as extra-long jibs, tower jibs, and wind power-specific jibs. With a lifting height of over 100 meters and a large working radius, they are capable of lifting heavy components at height and over long spans.

Crawler cranes are adaptable to operations in various harsh terrains: they can travel smoothly on soft ground (such as muddy areas, sandy ground, and swamps) without getting stuck due to excessive ground contact pressure; they can easily climb slopes and overcome obstacles on rugged mountainous terrain and gravel sites, as their crawlers offer strong grip and are resistant to slipping.

Crawler cranes are equipped with high-precision slewing mechanisms and luffing mechanisms, allowing 360° full-circle slewing operations with a complete circular working coverage area and precise adjustment of lifting angles. Meanwhile, they adopt advanced electro-hydraulic proportional control or intelligent control systems, featuring sensitive operational response and stable movements, which enable the slow lifting/lowering and precise positioning of heavy objects.

 Fixed Crane

  • Tower Crane

A tower crane is a type of lifting equipment that features a vertical tower body as its core support, with the jib slewing around the tower body to perform operations. It has a high lifting height and a large working radius, enabling it to cover an extensive high-altitude operation area. As a core piece of equipment in the construction field, it is widely used in scenarios such as high-rise building construction, bridge engineering, large-scale factory building construction, and municipal engineering.

Tower cranes adopt a modular design. Core components including the tower body, jib, and counter-jib can be flexibly disassembled and assembled, facilitating transportation and on-site installation. To meet the requirements of different construction stages, the tower crane can adapt its performance by adjusting the height of the tower body and replacing the length of the jib.

After the completion of installation and commissioning, a tower crane can be fixed at the construction site for a long period throughout the entire construction cycle to carry out continuous lifting operations. This can greatly improve the continuity and efficiency of construction, and it can operate 24 hours a day without interruption in coordination with the construction schedule.

  • Gantry Crane

A gantry crane is a type of lifting equipment that takes a gantry-shaped frame as its core support, with the bridge frame erected on ground rails via outriggers on both sides. Its core advantages lie in its wide operating range and strong site adaptability. It can realize large-scale and efficient lifting and transfer of heavy objects in open outdoor areas, and is widely used in outdoor scenarios such as ports and terminals, freight yards and warehouses, hydropower station construction sites, and bridge prefabrication yards.

The gantry crane travels relying on the rails laid on the ground. Its traveling mechanism is mostly driven by motors, featuring stable operation and controllable speed. It can accurately control the moving position of the equipment, thus ensuring the stability of heavy objects during the transfer process.

  • Overhead Crane

An overhead crane is a type of lifting equipment that uses a bridge frame as its core load-bearing structure. Spanning above the work site, it achieves three-dimensional operation through the long-travel and trolley mechanisms. Its working space is free from interference by ground obstacles, and it can fully utilize the overhead space of workshops and warehouses for lifting and transferring operations. As a core piece of lifting equipment for indoor and semi-open scenarios such as industrial production and warehousing & logistics, it is widely used in factory workshops, metallurgical plants, warehouse yards, hydropower station workshops and other places.
