What Is a Truck-Mounted Crane?

Truck-mounted crane is a specialized piece of equipment that skillfully integrates a crane with a cargo truck, typically installed on the truck. It is like a “flexible strongman”—it can transport goods just as an ordinary cargo truck does, while also possessing powerful lifting and hoisting capabilities.

The truck-mounted crane is mostly based on hydraulic lifting and telescopic operations, such as lifting, rotating, and hanging goods. The hydraulic system is the “heart” of pathogen isolation, providing power source to all equipment. When equipment is started, hydraulic pump operates and turns the engine’s, mechanical energy into hydraulic energy, sucks oil from tank and pressurizes it to form high pressure oil. This high release oil is fed by means of hydraulic conduit to numerous actuators, e.g., hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic motors.

The lifting arm is a key part of truck-mounted crane which directly reaches to hoisting job, and extends or retracts because hydraulic cylinder telescoping. After the high-pressure oil enters the hydraulic cylinder of the lifting arm, it pushes the piston to move so that the lifting arm extends or retracts at any time as needed — Changing (flexing and stretching) limits of lifting range and height in a flexible way, making it convenient for goods to change vertical position. The device is known as the winch mechanism; it works to lift or lower cargo and can be connected to a steel cable that is run through a hydraulic motor. The steel cable, similar to the “arm” of the truck-mounted crane is strong, slick and hard-wearing. It has steel core and sheath, which it can be provided with a competent tensile force. It couples the lifting arm with a motor-driven steel cable pulley producing a closed operation. Controlled by hydraulic system, it is easy to up and down.

The vertical column carries essential parts such as the lifting arm, winch devices and luffing cylinder, which are actuated by a slewing system. The slewing system generally consists of hydraulic motor and hydraulic reducer, and the purpose is to make column upright flexible rotation action, in order to achieve goods multi-angle lifting effect, greatly improving the equipment Operating flexibility. Frame base is mounted on the truck chassis directly, stable support for upright column and outrigger frame. It supplies a stable and dependable service for the whole truck mounted crane working. When lifting work, the operator can keep outstretched outrigger arms from the ground to avoid dangers of tilting or overturning while carrying heavy payloads and can prevent tirpping with other vehicles by superceding a contact area between equipmenet and the groud.

Composition of a Truck-Mounted Crane

Truck mounted crane is composed of the cargo truck chassis, loading and unloading devices and other parts.Truck mounted crane during the operation has a lot of parts to play an important role.

Cargo Truck Chassis

As the underbody of the truck mounted crane, chassis bears all the weight of the whole machine, which directly affects whether it is stable or not, whether it is easy to drive and so on – Just like in architecture: It can only be ensured stable if a solid foundation has been done. There are a variety of chassis brands to choose from including Dong Feng, Jie Fang, Auman, Steyr and Tangjun. Chassis in varying brands and models differ on their weight carrying capacity, wheelbase bore size and power setup. For Dongfeng chassis, for example, it has huge users in the market who are using the chassis and mature technology, supply of parts are adequate, maintenance is very convenient. Dongfeng chassis have various series orientations: some are mainly aimed at the loading, can adapt to all kinds of heavy cargo transport and hoisting work; some excellent performance in mobility, could through urban complex road operation ability.

Crane

Crane is the central apparatus of truck mounted crane, it’s mainly used for lifting and carrying goods. It can be roughly divided into: straight arm crane, folding arm crane difference point, there are more than a few.

From the price of folding arm and straight arm: generally speaking, the same tonnage of straight-arm crane is cheaper than that of folding-arm crane. This is due principally to the practical fact that folding-arm cranes have structure more complicated, technical content higher and cost in production process increasing simultaneously.

For performance, first type of straight-arm cranes have a simple structure, and lower operation difficulty. They are endowed with a large working radius and can be used for hoisting within a wide area. Furthermore, lifting is carried out by means of a steel cable winch mechanism for stable operation and accurate positioning. A separate example of cranes are folding-arm cranes that are manipulated like an excavator and has a higher level of technical skill. The lifting arm can be folded, the volume is small after retracting, it has more advantage compared to straight-arm is space limited. Operations For example when lifting goods via a window or working in confined warehouse, folding-arm cranes will be suitable for the operations. In a folding-arm crane, moreover, the serviceability is better; it can be mounted with other kinds of auxiliary implements to carry out multiple functions of operation, but its stability tends to be poor.

Cranes used in various working conditions have different type requirements. Straight-arm cranes can be flexibly exploited with long arm length and wide working range at open ground such as construction site, dock, etc., with precise lifting of heavy objects at predetermined sites; and folding-arm crane are able to operate more freely in narrow space like urban road section, indoor warehouse through their flexible folding structure and small volume to accomplish lift tasks.

Other Key Components

In addition to a cargo truck chassis and a crane, the truck-mounted crane also includes accessories such as PTO (power take-off), cargo box, hydraulic system, control system etc. The power take-off is a device which is connected to the engine and the hydraulic pump, enables transmitting vehicle-engine-power to the hydraulic pump that serves as a source of power for operating the truck mounted crane and functioning as an important element in realizing relative operations of crane. Cargo compartment is the place where goods are loaded, with different sizes and structures based on varying use demand and chassis arrangement; some can also be tailored for a certain category of transport cargo.

3.The hydraulic system is the heart of truck mounted crane. The vessel-mounted port crane realizes the stretching of the lifting arm and cap deflection through driving various actuators, such as hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic motors, by means of pressure transmission of hydraulic oil to achieve telescopic function, luffing function and swinging function of the lifting arm, as well as lifting or lowering goods. The hydraulic system performance has a direct impact on the working efficiency and stability of truck-mounted crane; A better quality hydraulic system is able to guarantee that the movement and reaction speed of CRANE is stable, rapid and with good overload safety protection.

Control device controls truck crane and its various action accurately. The crane is driven in the load lifting operation safety by an operator controlling system. The control system is generally composed of control levers, buttons and display screens, with some advanced crane’s having such functions as automatic control, fault monitoring and safe protection, which greatly facilitate the operation of the crane as well as enhance the safety.
